Safety & Security in Manaslu Region

The Manaslu region is generally considered safe for trekking, as long as basic safety rules are observed. When the trek is arranged by a trekking agency, most contingencies will be handled by their staff. However, when trekking alone, there may not be anyone to turn to for help in case of emergency. Therefore, it's recommended for trekkers to hire a good trekking agency or reliable guides if trekking in smaller groups. Women guides are also available for women trekkers.

To avoid risks while trekking, it's important to plan ahead, follow the rules, and understand one's own physical limitations. In the event of an emergency, a detailed message should be sent to a reliable organization or individual immediately to request a rescue operation. If communication facilities are unavailable, normal first aid principles should be followed until help arrives.

Some of the safety rules to abide are:

  • Do not trek alone: Always trek in a group or with a registered trekking agency and guide.
  • Do not display your cash or expensive items: Keep your valuables and cash hidden and secure.
  • Keep belongings secure and within sight: Keep your belongings within your sight and secure them properly.
  • Make arrangements for handling emergency situations beforehand: Be prepared for emergency situations and make necessary arrangements beforehand.
  • Register personal information and trekking plan details with the respective embassies: Provide your personal information and trekking plan details to the respective embassies in case of any emergency.
  • Buy a travel insurance policy that covers helicopter rescue costs: It's important to have travel insurance that covers helicopter rescue costs in case of any emergency. Leave a copy of the details with an agency in Kathmandu.
  • Choose only authorized government-registered trekking agencies, guides, and porters: Choose authorized government-registered trekking agencies, guides, and porters to ensure your safety and to support local communities.

While trekking, these are the more frequent problem you could face:

  • An upset stomach is a common ailment among trekkers, often caused by a change in diet or consuming contaminated food or water. To avoid it, it's important to pay particular attention to hygiene and the quality of food and drink.

  • Coughs, colds, and sore throats are also common in the dry mountain air, which can lead to chest infections. To avoid sore throats, try not to breathe cold air directly through the mouth and avoid smoking.

  • Joint and muscle strains, foot problems, and blisters are also common. Wearing good footwear can go a long way in preventing these issues. In case of sprains and strains, apply cold water to reduce swelling and support the joint with a crepe bandage.

  • Rapidly ascending to high altitudes can cause altitude sickness, which can be life-threatening. Acute mountain sickness (AMS) occurs due to the effects of thin air at high altitudes. Climbers going up to 3,000 meters or above should allow their body plenty of time to acclimatize. If initial symptoms of AMS such as headache, loss of appetite, swelling of the limbs, nausea, difficulty in sleeping, irregular breathing, and unusual weariness develop, descend to a lower altitude immediately and seek medical advice. It's also important to maintain good fluid intake to help combat altitude sickness.
